maybe if it still functioned as a staff/wand..because no squishy should be in melee range. Its only purpose would be for looks.

I like this idea. I would also like a scythe that works like a necro staff. Just simply taking the models/skins of other weapons and making them function like wands and staves (since we have very few caster skins as it is).

EDIT:

Sounds cool, too. A blunt wand-like mace that operates like the jitte, and a hammer-class weapon that looks like a staff for bludgeoning things in style. Nice!

There's a ton of them. They're just divided by caster type. Any sword works for any Warrior, but certain Wand/Stave styles are only available to each caster class, and on top of that are dependant on what attribute you've raised.

And all of those divided by the 5 caster classes. Compared to what all of the other classes have, that is severely limited.

Just recycle weapon models in place of a staff, wand, or focus item, and call it a day.

Scythes would be awesome necro staves. I could see a sword that shoots as well.

What would be really cool would be to also do the same w/ bows, but instead of the regular normal attack animation, have the character actually draw & fire the bow - but instead of an arrow, have the little globe fly out...

I think the point is that *only* warriors can effectively use swords, yet look how many skins there are for them. At the same time, while there are a lot of wand/staff/focus item skins, there aren't 5 times as many skins for them.

Exactly. Besides, more options for customization is never a bad thing, especially if the art is already in the game. This idea only requires a bit of a code tweak, not a rework of the entire system or anything.

Golden Phoenix Blade -> Golden Phoenix Wand: Same skin, different functionality.
Destroyer Staff -> Destroyer Battlestaff
Platinum Longbow -> Platinum Magic Bow (or whatever)

There are less caster weapons over all 5 classes than there are for just the warrior weapons alone. That is the point. It deserved repeating and clarification.

i shudder to think how much DPS a monk can add with a healing based sword, while running 14 in healing (which isn't all that rare).

nifty idea, but the impact on game balance is much to severe.

If it plays just like any other healing wand it wouldn't affect game balance whatsoever.

so the sword does not scale it's damage upward based on spec like a normal sword?

hmm, i guess it would be alright then.

not at all, this is a suggestion to make basically sword-skinned wands. I just added to it, but that is the essence of this suggestion (at least I'm pretty sure - OP to clarify?).

Umm no that isn't at all what the OP is suggesting... I think. I mean, if he just wants new skins... well, everybody wants new skins. That's like asking "would you like more storage?" Its a loaded question.
However, going on what he is saying, that he actually wants SWORDS, I'm going to /notsign (for balance issues). If that isn't what the OP is suggesting... then its not really much of a suggestion anyway.

I don't think so based purely on the fact that he put the damage (with requirement) just as it is on wands/staves. And it's not "new skins," it's using old skins that are already in the game (I guess), just making it so they have a caster counterpart - a sword that acts as a wand.

Again, this needs clarification from the OP, but what I'm posting is what I'm /signing to. If it were any different, I definitely wouldn't /sign that for, as you say, balance issues.
